Unity, Making or breaking the Body (as well as an interview with Daniel Shuey)

This sermon is preached by our Children's Pastor Michael Gonzalez. It is started with a 15 minute interview with Daniel Shuey who is one of the recently graduated youth from Graceyouth. Come and listen to the things which God has done in and through Daniels life. The sermon is titled "Unity, Making or Breaking the Body" There are certain tools which God has given his people, that if used properly will build and strengthen us, but if used wrongfully, can and will dstroy us. You have heard it said before that "Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me." Here is a new saying: "Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words can destroy the body"...

A few Claims of Christ

Jesus came to earth in human form over 2000 years ago. He lived in an isolated, Roman occupied country where the major mode of transportation was walking. There was no mass media for communication, and His ministry lasted only three and one half years. From those circumstances comes a man that has influenced the world more than any other person that has ever lived. A simply good person or prophet could not exert the kind of influence Jesus has had. From chapter eight of the Book of John, we look at six claims that Jesus makes declaring Himself to be the Son of God. And only the Son of God could make these claims and back them up.

2009: A Year of Generosity

When a poor widow was crying out to Elisha for help, he asked her what she had in her house. She had only a small amount of oil in a jar. That small amount of oil, when blessed by God, turned into many, many containers of oil. In these financially uncertain times, we, like this poor widow, can confidently face the shaky economy with generous hearts. The scriptures instruct us to be generous and to give with cheerful hearts and not out of a grudging obligation. Be encouraged to examine what you have in your house. Look for areas in which you can give generously, whether through your finances or material goods, your time, using your gifts and talents, etc. Prosperity is not measured by what you have, but by what you give away!

Powerful People

For Christians, the true definition of powerful people are those who have learned to apply the truths found in God’s Word. As our minds are renewed, our identities begin to experience a transformation. We become “powerful” through Christ from the inside out. Our identity in Christ now defines who we truly are. We no longer have to bear the identity of being powerless people, or “victims”. A victim is one who chooses to stay trapped in their old identity and allows what others say or do to define who they are. But, thanks be to God, Jesus has done for us and through us all that we need to become powerful people!"

Powerful People 2

A powerful person is one who has learned to respond rather than react to issues that arise in life. Responding to a situation requires a careful premeditated, “thinking through” of the circumstances and acting accordingly. Reacting is a “knee-jerk” response that has allowed no time to consider the words or actions about to come forth. Our flesh natures tend to be “reactive”, whereas if we are walking “in the Spirit”, we are able to receive the grace we need to respond correctly. Powerful people know how to “walk in the Spirit and not fulfill the lust of the flesh”!

What is a “trial of our faith” and how should we respond to it? This is a question worth exploring. The scripture declares that our response will reveal how genuine our faith is! Trials of our faith come through circumstances or people and truly powerful people do not allow these situations to define who they are. Rather, as children of the King, we mature through these trials and learn to respond in a manner fitting our identity.

Overcoming Temptation
Understanding how temptation works in leading us into sin is the first step in understanding how to overcome temptation – and then knowing how to respond to temptation will strengthen our ability to endure it. God’s grace is the divine ability to do what we cannot do in our own strength. Paul wrote to the Roman church that sin does not have dominion over us because we are not under the law, but under grace. We must learn how to appropriate this divine ability that God gives through grace to overcome temptation in our lives.

Responding to Coviction
Conviction is the inner knowledge and feelings of guilt we experience when we have sinned. Sin causes a sense of separation from God because our hearts begin to condemn us. Thankfully, we are only a prayer away from being free from the guilt that sin produces. A proper response to conviction is to repent, confess, receive cleansing and forgiveness, renounce the sin and then apply ourselves to allowing the Holy Spirit to renew our minds. Conviction is a good thing! It leads us to the Throne of Grace, whereas condemnation drives us away from God. A clean conscience should be the result of our response to conviction!

Responding To Offences
Jesus said "offenses must come". If they must come, then it would be in our best interest to be prepared when they do. Having a strategy in place that allows us to respond in a predetermined manner will help us manage our reactions when offenses do come our way. Without a strategy we tend to react rather than respond. We take ownership of the offense and become victims by giving the situation or person power in our lives. We then find we are defining ourselves by the offense - it becomes our identity and colors every decision we make. This sermon discusses how we can protect ourselves from offense by learning to let it roll off and not taking ownership of it.

Responding To Rejection
Rejection tells us that we are unwanted, unloved, unacceptable and unlovable. Living with these feelings can be very debilitating and must be confronted in our minds with the truth of God's word, followed with repentance, cleansing, and embracing what God says about us until it becomes our core belief. Giving and receiving love forms the foundation for our relationship with God, others and ourselves. Nothing is to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus!

A Selah Moment

Often, the Lord moves in the church service, we are blessed and life goes on. In a previous Sunday service, a strong teaching was presented on rejection, a word of knowledge was given concerning someone in the congregation, and a guest came forward and was prayed for. This sermon examines three things: What a word of knowledge is, the prayer of faith from the guest during the service, and the dynamic prayers of the church members.

Life After Death #1

The promises found in the Word of God for the Christian concerning life after death are sure. Death is a topic we should be familiar with and confident of. From the moment we believed and accepted Jesus as our Savior, we were given eternal life, which means that when we die, our spirit goes to be with Him immediately. Jesus, by conquering death, freed us from the bondage of the fear of death. This sermon series will inform and encourage believers to have hope in the death of the redeemed.

Three Heavens
When discussing the topic of life after death, it is important to understand that the term heaven is used in various contexts in the scriptures. For instance, the Apostle Paul writes about his visit to the third heaven which implies that at least three heavens exist. This sermons takes a look at possible explanations for understanding the first, second and third heaven.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ was said to be a first fruit of Christian experience. God's Word declares that Christians will one day receive bodies like that of the glorious, or resurrected body of Jesus. Examining what His glorified body was like gives us a foretaste of what we can expect in the future!

The scriptures give us many glimpses of heaven. We see this through stories Jesus told. We see it in Stephens words where he reveals an open heaven while he was being stoned to death. Paul and Peter give encouraging expectations of what will come when our physical bodies die. The Book of Revelation gives us a description of heaven. These texts provide the believer with a bright and hopeful glimpse of what is to come!

Leading Your Heart
Jesus said that where our treasure is, there our hearts would be also. The philosophy of the world teaches us to follow our heart. Since the heart tends to be about feelings, it can prove to be an unreliable leader due to the fact that it can fluctuate greatly depending on our circumstances. Our heart is meant to be led, not by our own feelings, but by the Holy Spirit. When we invest and sow God's Word into our hearts, we discover we're following the true treasure God Himself! Godly feelings will follow and our lives will show it!

Forgiving Others Part 1

Spiritual Conflict
The devil is an active agent of evil in the world. The name Satan literally means Accuser. He is always working to corrupt our minds with thoughts of blame, debt, and resentment towards those who have hurt or wronged us in some way. If we accept these thoughts and make them our own, then unforgiveness towards others begins to take root and creates spiritual conflict in our lives. We are exhorted in the Word of God to know the wiles, or tricks, of the devil. We are to avoid his snares and be soberly aware of his craftiness, understanding that he is our adversary.

As You Forgive Others
As I define "unforgiveness" and "forgiveness", it leads us to an understanding that each and every one of us must take steps to "settle" accounts. Jesus taught this in a parable of a man who owed more than he could possibly pay and yet was forgiven all his debt. Later this same man, rather than forgiving a very small debt owed to him, he demanded payment. In this parable, because of the man's actions, his original debt was reinstated he did not forgive as he had been forgiven. The Lord's Prayer teaches us to pray, "forgive us as we forgive others". For us to be and remain forgiven, we are required to forgive others.

Be Like Your Father
When Jesus was teaching on the subject of loving our enemies, blessing those who curse us, doing good to those who hate us, and praying for those who spitefully use and persecute us, He said we were to do these things so that we could be sons of our Father in heaven. He concluded this lesson with an incredible invitation: Be like God in this area! Amazing. God actually demonstrated His own teaching by sending Jesus to die for us and to forgive us of our sins - while we were still His enemies! He modeled it for us - and then instructed us to be like Him and to forgive others as He has forgiven us.

AMercy Triumphs Over Judgment
Jesus teaches us not to judge, not to condemn, and to forgive. He also says to give and it will be given to us with the same measure we give to others. When we forgive someone, we give in two ways: the first is giving up our right to judge and condemn the same way God gave up His right to judge and condemn us, and the second is showing the same grace and mercy that God showed us when He forgave us of our sins and offenses. The law of liberty is defined by the statement mercy triumphs over judgment. If we do not want to receive judgment for the things we have done wrong, then we are to respond with mercy to those who offend us.

Joseph: A Good Earthly Father
Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, is known to most of us as the guy in the background of the manger scene. Considering, however, the carefulness of God in selecting Mary to be the mother of the Savior of the world, it would only make sense that God would be just as selective when choosing an earthly father for Jesus. In this sermon, we examine three qualities of Joseph's life that would have helped shape the character of Jesus, the Son of Man and the Son of God.

What Are You Thinking?
Our thoughts generally come from three sources: God, the devil and our own minds. It is vital that we pay attention to what we are thinking about. When we allow ourselves to entertain wrong thoughts, these can, through the power of agreement, wreak havoc in our minds and lives. The Bible tells us clearly what we are to think about. When we apply these scriptures practically, it will make a profound difference in our quality of life. As we think, so shall we be.

A Good God In An Evil World

God is good and He is good all the time. But what about evil in the world? And what about injustice flourishing and bad things happening to good people. If God is a good God and a God of love, why does He allow evil and evil things to happen? If God allows something, is it His will for it to happen? These questions, and others, are important for us to understand in light of the proper ‘knowledge of God’. In this sermon, we look at the way God created the world, what happened to it, and who did it.

Too often the assumption is made that if God allows something to happen, it means that it is His will for it to happen. A misunderstanding of sovereignty will lead to this conclusion. In God’s sovereignty, He allows things to happen that are not His will. The Bible declares that God is willing that ‘none should perish’, and yet it is clear in scripture that there are those who will perish. It is not God’s will that we sin, yet He ‘allows’ us to. Through these misunderstandings God is blamed for evil which makes it difficult to fully trust Him. But the truth is that God is good, and He’s good all the time.

Jesus Is Perfect Theology

When considering and determining what God is like, it would be difficult to ascribe to Him anything that can’t be found in the person of Jesus Christ. The crucifixion of Jesus introduced a New Covenant and a new way of God relating to man. God’s “acts” are revealed in the Old Testament, but His nature is revealed in the New Testament through His Son, Jesus Christ.

When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray, He taught them what is called ‘The Lord’s Prayer’. It is actually the disciple’s prayer. Jesus taught us to pray for His Kingdom to come and that His will would be done on earth as it is in heaven. The Great Commission can actually be fulfilled as we pray for the things that are caused by this sin cursed earth to be impacted by the way it is in heaven, thus bringing His kingdom to earth. We are to contend earnestly for the faith to appropriate every provision of Calvary .

If Then You Were Raised With Christ

In the 6th chapter of Romans, Paul drives the point home that we died with Christ, and through water baptism, we are buried with Him. This death now qualifies us to live with God, and to live a new life. In Colossians, Paul states, ‘if then you were raised with Christ’, it will have certain effects and bear a certain fruit. The question is posed though, are we living in the life that God has provided through the offering of Jesus Christ, or are we living a life that reflects the nature that Jesus died to save us from? What we “put off” and “put on” determines the answer to these questions.

Considering the Least
Jesus said that when we minister to the least, that we are doing it to Him. Not unto Him, but to Him. What an incredible statement in the light of our tendency to be respecters of persons, and show partiality to the lovely, popular, rich or celebrity. For Grace Community Church to be a safe place, we need to have a vision of respecting all people, no matter what their station in life is. Loving the unlovely, and reaching out to those who are least is pleasing to God. It pleases Him so much, that His parable of how to inherit the kingdom is founded on it!

Choices

Choices
The freewill that God has given us is revealed in the choice we make throughout life. Life and death is set before us and we are to chose life, that is, those decisions that consider the Lord in the process. Spiritual maturity is gained by constantly making better and better choices that are determined by our relationship with God, and not our own will or understanding. Good choices lead us closer to Him, and bad choices create problems in our life. God’s solution for bad choices is repentance, cleansing, forgetting the things that we have put behind us, and reaching forward to the things before us! As we continue to make good choices (sowing to the Spirit), we know the plowman will overtake the reaper.

Pure Religion
The Book of James teaches that “pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble.” Widows and orphans are important to God. The opportunity we have to give to meet their needs is something we need to take seriously and not look to government programs to do what we are obligated and privileged to do. Our heritage as Christian Americans is to willingly give to meet the needs of the needy, not to be taxed (having the money taken from us) so that the government can be the benefactor.

Politics, Government and The Christian
Jesus said that we are the “salt of the earth”. He also declared that we are “the light of the world”. These are statements that indicated that our influence should be felt in the culture and society. The “Gospel of the Kingdom” is what Jesus said would be preached in all the world, right before the end. Christians should not have their heads in the sand, ignoring the moral disintegration we see today. We should be engaged in encouraging Christian influence in seven critical areas: Family, Church, Education, Media, The Arts, Business and Government.

Politics, Government and The Christian – Part 2
In Part 2 of a series on Politics, Government and Christians, we examine various quotes from our Founding Fathers concerning the issue of a Republic form of government working only when the people are religious and moral. A dependence on God along with Christian education is paramount for a Republic to work properly. Without this foundation, the citizens will become servants to the government rather than the government serving the people.

Politics, Government and The Christian – Part 3
Continuing with quotes from the Founding Fathers, we see clearly that the laws originally established in America were based on scripture and biblical principles. A change has taken place which is dramatically altering the legal system in our country. We have moved from the unchanging laws of God found in the Bible to “legal positivism” where the law is determined by the “State”. Christians should be actively involved in promoting a return to America’s roots rather than accepting laws which have been interpreted through the lens of a judge’s personal opinion.

A sermon preached by our Children's Pastor Michael Gonzalez:
The purpose of our lives is to glorify God, and as we fullfill this purpose our souls are truly satisfied, and as our souls are truly satisfied, God is once again glorified.

Strategy for Sin

Sin is bad and obedience to God is good. With this foundational understanding, it is necessary to examine an effective strategy for conquering sin. In this sermon we look at principles involved with behavior coming from what we believe. An effective strategy is to deal with the solution to sin rather than dealing with symptoms of sin. The solution to sin is to repent (change the way we think) and be transformed (behavior changed) by the renewing of our mind (how we think). Consecration (giving ourselves to things that increase our love for and relationship to God) is necessary for our growth as Christians.

In Everything Give Thanks

The will of God for our lives is to give thanks in all things. When we face times of trial, the act of faith that accesses the grace of God, which does for us what we cannot do for ourselves, empowers us to thank Him, and in doing so makes Him bigger than the trial we’re facing. When thanksgiving is not present, it’s easy to become complainers and move into a victim mentality with a negative attitude, rather than victors behaving triumphantly.

What it MEans To Believe in Jesus

History shows that many things have been taught by the Church to distort the image of God in the earth. In John 3, Jesus speaks at length with Nicodemus explaining spiritual issues to him. The spiritual issues discussed in this encounter gives us a good understanding of what it means to ‘believe in Jesus’ as well as the consequences of not believing in Him. The goal of God through Jesus Christ was not to judge the world but to save it.

The Righteousness of God

The Bible clearly states that the righteousness of God is a gift to those who place their trust in Jesus. Our personal righteousness can never measure up to God’s requirements, so He gives us the righteousness of Jesus to replace our own. Our striving to be good enough or worthy enough to be in a “right” relationship with God shows that we have zeal for God’s ways but lack the knowledge that the righteousness of God can only be received as a gift, and that by faith. As we believe and receive this gift of God, it will work in our lives to produce the fruit of righteousness which is righteous behavior.

A New Years Resolution: Procrastination

Any time is a good time to make resolutions about developing Christian character, but something about the New Year offers the appeal of new beginnings. Procrastination is something that affects us more than we know, and at its root is laziness. In this sermon, we look at the disadvantages of procrastinating and the advantages of not putting things off that need doing.

Am I A Safe Person?

For there to be “oneness” or “connectedness” between people, married couples especially, people need to feel safe with each other. Wherever you have two or more individuals, behavior will be varied enough to cause differences – therefore, conflict is the norm in relationships. Often, these relationships rely on coping mechanisms to survive rather than embracing conflict resolution. For there to be resolution, an environment of safety is a must. This sermon examines what safe vs unsafe behavior looks like.
